Okay, everyone, I want to know what’s on your nightstand right now. Books, articles, magazines — what’s giving you joy or insight right now in these very weird and hard times?
I have recently stepped outside of my comfort zone and have joined a romance book club with some local friends. I never read romance and, honestly, I’m still skeptical. But I’m giving it a try, currently reading A Lady’s Formula For Love by Elizabeth Everett, which is about a tryst between a young rebellious female scientist in Victorian England and her bodyguard. (Or so I’ve been told; I’m only on chapter 3, and nobody’s done anything scandalous yet!) I also recently read this powerful New York magazine article describing 8 very different conversations between mothers and their kids about what’s happening in Israel and Gaza. And I’m about to start reading Amanda Ripley’s book High Conflict, which explores the psychology of why discord so often distills into good-versus-evil, us-versus-them feuds.
