Does that egg-washing risk calculation change with fresh-laid homegrown eggs (covered in poop/feathers) vs store-bought ones?

Interestingly, the woman who originally told me this (Andrea Etter, who studies bacterial food safety at the University of Vermont) was referring to homegrown eggs. She said that she occasionally washes the eggs she gets from her neighbor if they're REALLY dirty , but she said it's typically better to use sandpaper. She said she does wash her hands after cracking the eggs.

Norovirus sucks so much. We had it last year, then 2 weeks after symptoms stopped we visited my sister - and gave it to her and her whole family. Even my dad, who only visited outside, got it.

I'm so sorry. It's THE WORST. I always feel like I'm going to die. And yes... norovirus can survive up to 42 days on surfaces (including clothes). ughhhhhhhh

Uggh did you catch this wild story of how norovirus spread on a backpacking trail? That article is how I learned that hand sanitizer doesn’t kill the virus!

Yes I did hear about that! Blehhhhhhhhhhh

I hate noro so much that I decline playdates/visits at people's houses if I know they've had norovirus within the family in the past month. I have even canceled trips because of it!

Norovirus is absolutely awful, and I don’t think enough people really understand just how contagious it is. There was a restaurant study about how many people in an entire restaurant got sick after one person vomited once… it was something like the nearest 10 tables.

The visual sign for norovirus does provide some comic relief, though!

I know, it's SO contagious. A little girl threw up within ten feet of me while I was sitting in a chair waiting for my daughter at gymnastics a few months ago and I held my breath and grabbed all my stuff and ran away as quickly and nonchalantly as possible, lol. Amazingly I did not get sick! (Granted she could have thrown up for other reasons, but it was when norovirus was everywhere in our community.)

Have you heard of adenovirus?? I’m pretty sure we have it right now. It’s been MISERABLE truly miserable. I’ve been Lysol spraying all of the surfaces in the house (I read online that Lysol will kill adenovirus). Do I need to let the Lysol sit in order to kill the viruses?

It all started w my 2 year old throwing up on Sat night ☹️

Adenoviruses are nasty, I’m so sorry! Yes let the spray sit for 3min before wiping it off if you can.

Re bleach, is there any evidence on effectiveness of percabonate aka oxiclean? We use it on all the gunk - fast to mix up, easy to handle, no residue or smell.

From what I understand, sodium percarbonate breaks down into hydrogen peroxide when it comes into contact with water, and I know hydrogen peroxide does kill nasty bugs like norovirus. I believe it's been shown to inactivate the Covid virus too...

We couldn't get out of a cycle of stomach flu every three months or so. Then, we ended up cancelling our [mega gym] membership and the cycle ended around the same time. Even though there's no way to prove that the gym was making us sick--our youngest toddler also got older!--I still am on high alert whenever I start a new fitness program. Gym trauma!

Thanks for the tips! I've gone down several rabbit holes learning new things based on them.
