This is a great interview.

I am pretty good at teaching the self-advocacy skills, or at least scaffolding them (I frequently ask my children, when they bring me a problem or issue, "What do you think we should do? How can we solve this?"), but it all falls apart in the doctor's office. (To be fair, medical staff don't do a great job speaking to children -- we sit down, they look at me and talk to me and ask me all the questions, like my kid isn't even in the room. I do what I can to bring my daughters into the conversation, but I also know that I do too much talking, so thank you for this.)
